Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

The SAKG National Program

Kitchen Garden Schools deliver regular kitchen and garden classes, enabling skills-based learning that extends across the entire school curriculum.

As participants in the Kitchen Garden Program, eight to twelve year-old children spend structured time in a productive veggie garden and home-style kitchen as part of their everyday school experience. There they learn skills that will last them a lifetime, and discover just how much fun it is to grow and cook their own seasonal vegetables and fruits.

SAKG at St James Catholic College

St James Catholic College is proud to be involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.

By taking this holistic approach we’re able to bring children back to the roots of good food. The Kitchen Garden Program connects students with  the land, helps them understand what it is to nurture the soil and the seeds they plant in it, and to share the joy of the harvesting and cooking and then  eating together. Thus they may learn to live sustainably and to take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

Nicky Crane co-ordinates the planning and everyday care of the garden enthusiastically assisted by students and classroom teachers.

The SAKG program is designed to help students utilise the fresh, organic produce that the garden supplies in healthy recipes.
